Geodetic methods and calculations are often required to correctly combine, manipulate, and analyze spatial data. In recognition of the importance of geodesy in modern professional geospatial practice, a geodetic certification program is proposed by the American Association for Geodetic Surveying (AAGS), in cooperation with the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS). Participation of other professional geospatial organizations will be solicited as part of program development.

The intent of geodetic certification is to provide official recognition that a person has the working knowledge and skills to understand and solve practical problems in applied geodesy. Typical practitioners include surveyors, geodetic/geomatics engineers, geospatial software developers, geographic information systems (GIS) professionals, and geospatial data managers.

The questionnaire was created to determine interest among geospatial professionals, and to begin identifying the breadth and depth of geodetic knowledge required to achieve minimum competence. It consisted of 50 questions divided into the nine sections listed below and included an option to provide additional comments.
